Λένε ότι η αφετηρία ενός μουσικού ονόματος συμπυκνώνει όλα τα βιώματα της ως τότε ζωής του και για αυτό οι πρώτες δουλειές του είναι και οι πιο ουσιώδεις. Συμβαίνει όμως, το ίδιο αφότου έχει περάσει ένα σεβαστό διάστημα όπου οι εμπειρίες έχουν βοηθήσει να διανυθεί η απόσταση από το μηδέν ως την ωριμότητα; Ως απάντηση μπορεί να ιδωθεί αυτή εδώ η κυκλοφορία του Vatican Shadow.

Μιλάμε για 21 χρόνια πορείας, για τα άπειρα project με το κύριο και πιο αναγνωρίσιμο να είναι το προσωπικό του σχήμα ως Prurient, για τη σκυτάλη που πήρε από την χρυσή γενιά της Sandwell District, ως VS ο ίδιος, για την διάθεση του να συνδέσει τις underground παραδόσεις που τον έκαναν αυτό που είναι μουσικά σήμερα. Θα μπορούσε να αποτυπωθεί το εύρος των μουσικών του καταθέσεων σε ένα ενενηντάλεπτο μιξ; Σίγουρα όχι! Αυτό όμως, που αποτυπώνεται είναι ένας πλούτος εμπειριών και ένας τρόπος προσέγγισης της καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας που λέγεται μουσική (ας μην το ξεχνάμε αυτό), κάπως φιλοσοφημένος.

Η ύπαρξη των cut ups λουπών που διαχέεται στη ροή του μιξ, δίνει ένα μυστηριακό τόνο, όχι όμως, απόκοσμο, αλλά με ουσία. Οι αμέτρητες επιλογές δένονται μεταξύ τους ως ένα παζλ που αναδεικνύει κάτι νέο και διαφορετικό από αυτό που φάνταζε ότι θα βγει στην αρχή. Οι πιο electro και ήπιες ατμοσφαιρικές στιγμές δίνουν τη σειρά τους σε πιο techno περάσματα και, κάπου προς το τέλος, έρχεται η καθολική αποδόμηση, με τον θόρυβο να εναλλάσσεται με την μελωδία, χωρίς όμως, να νικά το χάος στην όποια μορφή του. Απόδειξη της μεστότητας του όλου μιξ είναι η αίσθηση της μαθηματικής κυκλικότητας του, όπου κάνει το κλείσιμο να θυμίζει αρκετά το μπάσιμο του σετ, φέρνοντας στο νου το νόημα της ρήσης του Genesis P Orridge που ακούγεται και στα δύο αυτά μέρη και αναδεικνύει το όλον ως ένα… One being, one orientation, one power.

Καθώς έχω την άποψη, ότι στις περισσότερες δουλειές του κατά κόσμο Dominick Fernow λείπει αυτό το κάτι που θα τις απογείωνε, εδώ ομολογώ, ότι όλα βρίσκονται σε μια χορταστική ισορροπία. Κάπως έτσι και η βινυλιακή έκδοση που περιέχει τις αποκλειστικότητες της λίστας, ενώ αρχικά φάνταζε ως το διαμάντι του ντουέτου των κυκλοφοριών, εντούτοις είναι το μιξ στο οποίο επιχειρείται επιτυχημένα το πάντρεμα της χορευτικότητας με την εγκεφαλικότητα, κάνοντας της κυκλοφορία αυτή να αποτελεί μια επιτομή του τι σημαίνει techno σήμερα!

It is said that the beginning of a music name conjures all the experiences of their life up until then and that’s why their first works are the most essential ones. Does, though, the same happens even after a considerable amount of time in which experiences aid in traversing the distance from zero to maturity? This Vatican Shadow’s very launch can be taken as a response to that.

We’re talking over a 21-year course; innumerable projects with “Prurient” being its main and most popular personal line up; the baton it took from the Sandwell District golden generation being himself the VS; his willingness to link the underground cults that made him what he musically is today. Could his whole range of musical deposits be captured in a 90-minute mix? Definitely not! But what is captured is a wealth of experiences and a manner of approaching artistic creation called “music” (not to be forgotten) somewhat philosophical.

The existence of the cut-up loops, which are diffused in the mix, gives a mysterious tone, far from eerie but with meaning. The innumerable options are bound together as a puzzle highlighting something new and different from what it seemed to come out at first. The most electro and mild atmospheric moments give their place to some more techno riffs and, somewhere in the end, absolute degradation comes, with the noise interchanging with the melody, but without defeating chaos of whatever form. Proof of the meaningfulness of the whole mix is the sensation of mathematical circularity which makes the closure resembling the introduction of the set, bearing in mind the meaning of the quote of Genesis P. Orridge, heard in both placements designating the whole as one… “One being, one orientation, one power”.

Having the opinion that in most of his work –worldly- Dominick Fernow is missing the very point that would skyrocket it, hereby I admit that everything is in an indulging balance. Somehow as that, the vinyl version, containing the exclusivities of the list, while initially seemed to be the diamond of the duet of the works, it is nevertheless the mix in which the breeding of dance and intellectuality is attempted, making this work to be the epitome of what techno means today!
