Η εμφάνιση διαφόρων κύκλων που αποτελούνται από όμορα σχήματα είναι σύνηθες φαινόμενο στον black metal χώρο. Έλκοντας την αφετηρία της στις πρώιμες μέρες του δεύτερου κύματος αυτού του ήχου, η ύπαρξη των προαναφερθεισών ομαδοποιήσεων είναι ζωτικό σημείο του χάρτη αυτής της σκηνής,ακόμα και σήμερα. Αυτό γίνεται εύκολα αντιληπτό από την εμφάνιση διαφόρων αντίστοιχων προσπαθειών πρόσφατα – μπορώ άνετα να θυμηθώ το ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον που τράβηξαν πάνω τους οι εκ της Πορτογαλίας και Ισλανδίας προερχόμενες απόπειρες, τις οποίες μάλιστα κάποιοι αποθεώνουν, ενώ αντίθετα άλλοι τις αντιμετωπίζουν ως απλά underground trends.

Αν και προσωπικά αποφεύγω την ταξινόμηση με βάση την καταγωγή, είναι αδύνατον να μην παρατηρήσω το ολότελα αυξημένο ενδιαφέρον σχετικά με μπάντες προερχόμενες από την Βοσνία-Ερζεγοβίνη, μια χώρα με απειροελάχιστη παράδοση στον συγκεκριμένο ήχο, η οποία εσχάτως όμως έχει προσφέρει μια πληθώρα σχηματισμών, με κύρια αιχμή ανάμεσά τους τους Obskuritatem. Ο ακατέργαστος, στα όρια του θορύβου, ήχος των τελευταίων, θα μπορούσε να λειτουργήσει ως ένδειξη σχετικά με την κατεύθυνση των λοιπών συνοδοιπόρων τους. Η επιρροή των Les Legions Noires είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη, κάτι που γίνεται άμεσα κατανοητό από τους τίτλους αλλά και από και τα σύμβολα που χρησιμοποιούνται. Αλλά και από την ηχητική και όχι μόνο στάση τους, που επιβάλλει σχεδόν μια ωμή, αμόλυντη από τεχνικές υπερβάσεις, πρόθεση. Ανάμεσα σε διάφορες μπάντες αυτού του κύματος, λοιπόν, επέλεξα να παρουσιάσω αυτήν εδώ,για διάφορους λόγους.

Πρόκειται για το προσωπικό όχημα ενός μουσικού που συμμετέχει και σε κάποιες άλλες απόπειρες του ανώνυμου βοσνιακού κύκλου. Το καθόλου εύληπτο όνομά της, όπως επίσης και οι τίτλοι, που με δυσκολία κάποιος θα μπορούσε να προφέρει, λειτουργούν ως άμεση παραπομπή στις λεγεώνες που ανέφερα πριν. Μόνο που εδώ δεν έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια ακόμα σχετιζόμενη με το metal απόπειρα. Μάλιστα, θα έλεγα πως η εδώ ευρισκόμενη ηχουργία, αψηφά ακόμα και τα τυπικά όρια των ambient δρόμων.

Το συγκεκριμένο demo αποτελείται από μόλις 3 συνθέσεις, τις οποίες χοντρικά θα σκιαγραφούσα ως ρυθμικό ambient, το οποίο όμως δονείται από πληθώρα βιομηχανικών παραπομπών, όπως και ίχνη προερχόμενα τόσο από τη raw black metal τεχνοτροπία, όσο και, παραδόξως ίσως, από διαφορετικές πτυχές της ηλεκτρονικής έπαρσης. Το πρώτο κομμάτι αβίαστα δημιουργεί μια αίσθηση ύπνωσης. Το σχεδόν industrial ηχόχρωμα απλώνεται οριακά,συμπλέοντας με γκρίζα beat και φωνές που βιώνονται ως αντηχήσεις. Ο ακατέργαστος μα αρκούντως ψυχεδελικός σφυγμός του μου έφερε στον νου αντίστοιχα πειράματά μου, από παλαιότερες εποχές. Η έκπληξή μου όμως γίνεται πρόδηλη στο δεύτερο μέρος αυτής της κασέτας, όπου δίπλα σε μια σχεδόν άστοργη, νιχιλιστική εκκένωση θορύβου, κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους έντονα ρυθμικοί παλμοί. Προσωπικά, ένιωσα κάπως σαν να βρίσκομαι σε μια τελετουργία αντιθέτων, ενώ για κάποιον ανεξιχνίαστο λόγο θυμήθηκα τους/τον Four Tet! Σε απόλυτα σκοτεινό πλαίσιο,βέβαια. Αυτές οι προσμείξεις βρίσκουν το αποκορύφωμά τους στο τέλος αυτής της ακρόασης. Το τρίτο κομμάτι συνταιριάζει αυτές τις επιρροές με μια απαράμιλλα υπόγεια αντίληψη, ενώ η αέρινη απαγγελία που ακούγεται εν μέσω των διονυσιακών θορυβικών εξάρσεων προσδίδει μια εντελώς μυστικιστική αύρα στο όλο εγχείρημα. Κλείνοντας αυτήν την εμπειρία με τον καλύτερα δυνατό τρόπο: με έναν επίλογο που δεν είναι επίλογος, κατ’ ουσίαν.

Είναι εκ των πραγμάτων εμφανές – αυτή η ακρόαση μου προκάλεσε έκπληξη. Το στιλ του πρωτοεμφανιζόμενου αυτού σχήματος διαφέρει αισθητά από άλλες, συγγενικές προσπάθειες. Συνεπώς, η προσωπικότητά του διατυμπανίζεται ευθέως και αποτελεί μια άριστη βάση για επερχόμενες, μελλοντικές απόπειρες. Στο παρόν, να σημειώσω απλώς πως τέτοιας ποιότητας απόπειρες σπανίζουν στις μέρες μας. Σε μια μάλλον άνυδρη χρονιά, κάποιες εκ του underground προερχόμενες φάσεις προσφέρουν μια εναλλακτική, ελπιδοφόρα ματιά. Κάτι κοχλάζει, λοιπόν… Τα αποτελέσματα όμως θα γίνουν ορατά στα επόμενα χρόνια,θαρρώ. Το σίγουρο είναι πως η αφετηρία έχει τεθεί. Και αυτό το demo είναι μια ακριβής και ευφάνταστη παραδοχή αυτής της εντύπωσης. Μια απολαυστική καταγραφή διθυραμβικής ενατένισης. Που δυναμικά προστίθεται στη ζώνη του (μη) υπάρχοντος.

The appearance, as well as the blooming, of certain circles that are usually comprised of a variety of bordering formations, is a common phenomenon, within the ranks of the black metal milieu. Tracing this tendency’s starting point would lead us to today’s scene initial foundations, that were set by what is now known as the second-wave of said scene. Even then, the existence of the aforementioned circular movements was – and, in fact still is – a vital part of this genre’s map. A point that is easily confirmed by the emergence of a number of several yet similar attempts, in recent times – among which I could effortlessly recall the special interest that was drawn upon a series of releases coming out of Portugal and Iceland based circles, respectively. These works have been highly praised by some – while others tend to view them as fashionable underground trends.

Even though, personally, I tend to avoid categorizations that are based on national origins-related assumptions, it is, on my behalf, impossible to ignore the increasing attention towards a great number of bands that are coming from Bosnia-Herzegovina. A country with an almost nonexistent contribution to this specific genre, so far; the later being a situation that has drastically changed in recent years, with the emergence of a plethora of groups originating from Bosnian soil, with Obskuritatem standing at this scene’s forefront, until today. The totally raw approach of the later, which regularly borders on noise inflicted territory, could in fact function as an indication regarding the sound trails followed by the rest of their companions.

The legacy of Les Legion Noires comes off as an utmost significant influence, before all else, a fact easily comprehensible by the usage of similar titles and symbolisms, to the ones once used by the French collective. Said fact is even more evident when researching approaches, regarding sonic fragments while including several hints that stretch beyond the strictly musical related field. Approaches that seem to impose a stance that is based on a totally stripped, devoid of transcending technicalities, intention. Among many bands affiliated to this recently spawned wave, I chose to present this one. A decision adopted based on some eclectic reasons.

What we have here is a personal project of a musician that has participated to a handful of bands that are connected to the unnamed Bosnian circle. Its name, as well as the titles presented, are so hard to pronounce, for sure. A definite similarity, once again reminiscent of the above mentioned legions. The major point of difference though, is that this is a work that has little to do with metal terrains, altogether. Moreover, I could state that the sonic litany that is contained herein, moves beyond the usual ambient connected paths.

The demo tape that we are talking about, is comprisedof only 3 compositions. These compositions could be roughly outlined as being asort of immensely rhythmic dark ambient. On a more indicative level, one mightnotice traces of industrial references, as well as vestiges emanating from araw black metal stylization, not forgetting to include some, absurdly perhaps,unexpected textures that could be attributed as nods referring to certainaspects of an electronica infused type of boastfulness. The first track shines off as an effortless testament of a hypnotic haze. An almost industrial sounding timbre is marginally spreading, drifting along with gray colored beatsand voices that come across as reverberations. The unpolished, yet enormously psychedelic pulsation that this track possesses, brought to mind certain,equivalent experiments of my own that took place many years ago. My initial surprise is even more apparently manifested when moving to the second part ofthis cassette, though. Next to an almost careless, nihilistic evacuation of pure noise, comes the appearance of intensely rhythmic palms and seizures. Personally I sensed a feeling that resembled a ceremony of opposites, while,for some awkward reason, I was reminded of Four Tet’s style. In through atotally darkened spectrum, that is. These amalgamations reach their point ofzenith, as I gradually move towards the end of this listening experience. The third song of this demo gladly combines all said influences, adding anunparalleled, subterranean dimension to them. Whilst an eerie recitation thatis softly heard among dionysian, frenzied outbursts of noise, provides acharmingly mystical aura to this venture, as a whole. Enclosing this ride, inthe most perfect of ways: by simply forming an epilogue. Whom, in return, isnot an epilogue at all.

So – my guess is, that by all means, it is obviousthat this release stirred a grand surprise to me. The sonic path chosen by this debuting formation differs quite a lot, if compared to other, kindred-spirited efforts. Thus, its decisive personality bluntly stands out. Exemplifying an excellent basis for incoming future attempts. Focusing solely on the presentfield, I must admit that works of such quality are rare these days. In a rather uninspired year, there were a few great releases coming off the underground,standing as proof of a freshly alternative view that is on offer. Something is boiling, I guess… The results of this procedure will most probably be visible in years to come. The important factor for now, is that the point of departurehas already been set. This demo tape can be seen as a precise and imaginativeacceptance of the impression stated above. A delightful recording thatfunctions as a sign of an enthusiastic contemplation, of all sorts. One that is dynamically inserted to the zone of (non) existence.
