Bald Anders – Spiel (Trollmusic)

Είναι μάλλον, προφανές ότι τα αδέρφια Constantin και Benjamin Konig (πρώην Lunar Aurora) δημιουργώντας τους Bald Anders το 2014 δεν είχαν σκοπό να περιχαρακώσουν την μουσική τους – ή να περιχαρακωθούν από αυτήν – αλλά, μάλλον να αφεθούν ελεύθεροι σε ό,τι προκύψει, σαλπάροντας για μια παράξενη περιπέτεια. Το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους Spiel, αποτελεί μια περήφανη επιβεβαίωση, αφού αναπτύσσεται και ελίσσεται με ξεκάθαρη αδιαφορία ως προς το που θα καταταχτεί στιλιστικά και με φανερή απροθυμία να παραδοθεί ολοκληρωτικά στις ίδιες του τις επιρροές.

Η τραχιά παραγωγή του Spiel – ίσως άθελα του- αναδεικνύει πολλές από τις ‘80s καταβολές του: τα μεταλλικά riffs έχουν ένα ωμό, σχεδόν punk attitude, θυμίζοντας λίγο παλιές thrash ή black μπάντες, την ίδια όμως, στιγμή τα μελωδικά φωνητικά και οι ευρηματικές ενορχηστρώσεις προσθέτουν νότες μυστηρίου στο όλο ηχητικό τοπίο. Γενικά, θα έλεγα ότι πρόκειται για ένα ατμοσφαιρικό και πειραματικό metal/rock, κάθε track του άλμπουμ όμως, φυλάει τα δικά του μυστικά. Μπορώ να διακρίνω αχνά μια σύνδεση και με τους Einstürzende Neubauten, ίσως όχι ακριβώς με τους ίδιους ντανταϊστικούς όρους, αλλά σίγουρα με μια διάθεση συγκαλυμμένης, καπριτσιόζας ανατροπής και με μια λογοτεχνικότητα στην φόρμα.

Οι Bald Anders αποτελούν μια εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα περίπτωση, μιας εκούσια ρευστής μπάντας. Με μια bigger than life παραγωγή τύπου Monotheist (Celtic Frost φυσικά), ίσως το τρίτο άλμπουμ να ταράξει για τα καλά τα νερά! Το βλέμμα μας καρφώθηκε πάνω σας.

 

 

Farsot/ColdWorld – Toteninsel (Lupus Lounge/Prophecy Productions)

Δύο από τις πιο ενδιαφέρουσες και ανερχόμενες γερμανικές black metal μπάντες ενώνουν δυνάμεις για ένα split EP αφιερωμένο στη μουσική διερεύνηση ενός πίνακα; Δύσκολο να μην σε μαγνητίσει η ιδέα! Ο πίνακας Toteninsel (‘’Το νησί των νεκρών’’) του Αυστριακού συμβολιστή ζωγράφου Arnold Bocklin υψώνει τα τρομερά του βράχια στο μουντό, απόκοσμο τοπίο και η μουσική, σαν το βαρκάρη, πλησιάζει πρόθυμα και αργά προς τις σκιές μιας νύχτας χωρίς τέλος.

Οι δύο συνθέσεις των Farsot είναι, κατά κύριο λόγο, ακουστικές. Στα 8 λεπτά του ‘’Erde I’’ οι ακουστικές κιθάρες πλέκουν έναν παγωμένο και αδιαπέραστο ιστό, ενώ το rhythm section οδηγεί τη σύνθεση διατηρώντας τον κρυμμένο metal του χαρακτήρα. Τα riffs και τα φωνητικά, όταν εμφανίζονται, θυμίζουν μια ψυχρή ανάσα, έναν απειλητικό ψίθυρο, την χαμένη ανάμνηση ενός παλιού θρήνου. Το επίσης, ακουστικό ‘’Erde II’’ εισάγει αντίθετα μια διαφορετική μελωδικότητα και υποψίες λυρισμού. Θεωρώ, ότι κάτι πήγε στραβά στη μίξη και τα τύμπανα έμειναν ‘’πίσω’’, τα δύο μέρη του ‘’Erde’’ όμως, αλληλοσυμπληρώνονται ιδανικά και με κάνουν να υποψιάζομαι ότι η κρυμμένη avant garde-ίλα των Farsot θα δημιουργήσει άκρως ενδιαφέροντα full length άλμπουμ.

Οι ColdWorld αναλαμβάνουν περίπου στον ίδιο τόνο, αν και το δικό τους ύφος ακολουθεί πιο καταθλιπτικά μονοπάτια. Το ‘’Wasser I’’ είναι ένα πανέμορφο instrumental, όπου τα αινιγματικά ακόρντα και οι μελωδική κιθαριστική ανάπτυξη παραπέμπει ξεκάθαρα σε post/shoegaze ήχους. Το 9λεπτο ‘’Wasser II’’ έρπεται βαριά σε ένα βασανιστικό tempo, δεν ξεσπάει ποτέ, παρασέρνει τον ακροατή σε έναν ανέλπιδο και χωρίς φως κόσμο. Παρόλα αυτά, πρέπει να αναφέρω ότι οι ColdWorld και η μελαγχολία τους είναι άψογα εναρμονισμένοι με τις τάσεις της εποχής.

Συνολικά, μια εξαιρετική και αρτιστίκ κυκλοφορία που ταυτόχρονα βρίθει από underground μεράκι. Η μυστική ακτή της ‘’νήσου των νεκρών’’ είναι πάντα εκεί, 140 χρόνια τώρα και δεν έχει καμιά απάντηση στα αινίγματα που η ίδια θέτει.

 

 

Noekk – Carol Stones and Elder Rock (Prophecy Productions)

Οι Schwardorf και Helm των Empyrium (εδώ ως Yugoth και Baldachin) κυκλοφορούν με το prog rock ντουέτο τους Noekk αυτό εδώ το 7ιντσο (μόνο σε περιορισμένο βινύλιο και ψηφιακά), μετά από μια δεκαετία σιωπής. Στα 4 track του Carol Stones and Elder Rock βέβαια, ο χαρακτηρισμός prog είναι σχεδόν ανεπαίσθητος και δικαιολογείται μόνο στο ‘’Archaic tune’’ και στα παράξενα πλήκτρα που διακοσμούν όλη την κυκλοφορία. Κατά τα άλλα, πρόκειται για ένα ακουστικό EP που στα αυτιά μου μοιάζει περισσότερο με μια obscure neo-folk, απροσδιόριστης ταυτότητας. Οι ακουστικές και τα jazzy grooves (ειδικά στο αγαπημένο μου ‘’Pan’’) μπλέκονται με τα υπέροχα, βαθιά φωνητικά και ξεχύνονται στο κυνήγι κάποιου στοιχειωμένου ονείρου. Αν και υπάρχει ένας ‘70s αέρας, οι στίχοι του Peter Wolfgang Kassel – καλλιτέχνης που εδρεύει στο Μόναχο – συμβάλλουν καταλυτικά στη δημιουργία μιας αίσθησης ‘’φθινοπωρινού μυστικισμού’’, κατά την ίδια την μπάντα και όσο κι αν θέλω να αποφύγω τα στερεότυπα περί ξέφωτων και δασών, είναι γεγονός ότι υπάρχει, όντως, μια τέτοια φυσιοκεντρική αίσθηση. Απομένει να δούμε αν το Carol Stones and Elder Rock σηματοδοτεί το ύφος του επερχόμενου full length τους (αναμένεται μέσα στο 2019) ή αν στέκεται σαν μια αυτόφωτη στιγμή μες στον δημιουργικό τους χρόνο.

Bald Anders – Spiel (Trollmusic)

It is rather obvious that by forming Bald Anders back in 2014, siblings Constantin and Benjamin Konig (former Lunar Aurora) did not intend to restrict their music – or be restricted from it – but to apparently let themselves free to whatever happens, setting sail for a strange adventure. Their sophomore album Spiel confirms the above, as it evolves and twists totally ignorant of how it would be stylistically labelled and obviously reluctant to surrender itself even to its own influences.

Maybe unwittingly, Spiel‘s raw production showcases its ‘80s origins, with rough edged metallic riffs of an almost punk attitude that reminds old school thrash/black, nevertheless melodic vocals and sophisticated arrangements add tones of mystery to the whole soundscape. Generally speaking, Spiel contains atmospheric and experimental metal/rock but every track unravels its own secrets. I can also perceive a vague connection with Einsturzende Neubauten, maybe not with the same Dadaistic terms, but definitely with a relative, well-hidden mood of capricious subversion and with a similar literary form.

Bald Anders is an extremely interesting case of a willingly open to perception, transparent band. With a bigger than life production as Celtic Frost’s Monotheist for example, their third album will have the potential of having a massive impact to metal scene. Our eyes are on them.]

Farsot/ColdWorld – Toteninsel (Lupus Lounge/Prophecy Productions)

Two of the most interesting and rising German black metal bands join forces for a split EP dedicated to the musical exploration of a painting? It’s hard not to be mesmerised by this concept! Toteninsel (‘’the isle of the dead’’) by the Austrian symbolist painter Arnold Bocklin raises its horrible rocks on the gloomy eerie landscape and music, as the boatman, heads slowly and willingly towards the shadows of a never ending night.

Farsot‘s two compositions are mainly acoustic. During the 8 minutes of ‘’Erde I’’ the acoustic guitars weave a frosty and impenetrable web, while the rhythm section reserves the well-hidden metal character of the song. When appeared, riffs and vocals evoke a cold breath, a threatening whisper, the lost memory of an old lament. The also acoustic ‘’Erde II’’ enters a different melodic mood with a lyrical element. Though i think that something went wrong in the mixing of this one as drums are lost at the back, the two tracks are perfectly intertwined, leaving me certain that Farsot’s discrete avant-garde aura is capable of producing extremely fascinating full length albums.

ColdWorld take over in the same mood, though their style stays more focused on depressive musical paths. ‘’Wasser I’’ is a beautiful instrumental piece, where the enigmatic chords and the melodic guitar progression clearly reminds of post/shoegaze sounds. The 9minute ‘’Wasser II’’ on the other hand, crawls heavily under a doomy tempo, never outbreaking, dragging the listener deeper into a lightless, hopeless world. I have to point out though that ColdWorld’s melancholic textures are perfectly aligned with present black metal trends.

Overall, it s an exquisite and very artistic release that overflows with underground passion at the same time. The secret shore of the isle of the dead still stands somewhere, for 140 years now, offering no answers to the questions it alone raised.

Noekk – Carol Stones and Elder Rock (Prophecy Productions)

Empyrium’s Schwadorf and Helm (here as Yugoth and Bachdanin) release with their prog rock duo Noekk a new EP (limited 7” and digital release only) breaking a decade of silence. In the 4 tracks of Carol Stones and Elder Rock the prog elements are very subtle though and they can be more noticed in ‘’Archaic Tune’’ and in the strange keyboards sounds throughout the whole EP. Besides that, to my ears it sounds like an obscure neo-folk of unknown origin. Acoustic guitars and jazzy grooves (especially in my favourite ‘’Pan’’) are blended with the wonderful, deep vocals, setting out on a hunt of some haunting dream. Though a ‘70s mood can be sensed, the lyrics of Peter Wolfgang Kassel – a Munich-based artist – contribute to the creation of an “autumnal mystique” aura, described in the band’s own words. As much as I want to avoid stereotypes of woods and glades, the naturalistic essence of Carol Stones and Elder Rock is beyond doubt. It remains to be seen if this lovely EP signifies the direction of their highly anticipated full length (expected in 2019) or if it stands by itself as a self-luminous moment within Noekk’s creative path.
