Το φαινομενικά άγνωστο αυτό σχήμα προέρχεται από την Ολλανδία. Έχοντας ήδη, μερικές κυκλοφορίες στο ως τώρα ενεργητικό του, κυρίως υπό τη μορφή κασέτας. Το αυτό συμβαίνει και εδώ, σε ό,τι αφορά το format, τουλάχιστον. Πρόκειται για το solo όχημα του Tjalling Janssen, ο οποίος παρουσιάζεται ιδιαιτέρως παραγωγικός, έχοντας ήδη, δημιουργήσει – ή πάρει μέρος σε – μια σειρά από σχηματισμούς. Με την πλειοψηφία εξ αυτών να κινείται στο χώρο του metal, με την εξαίρεση κάποιων που κινούνται στις παρυφές του σκοτεινού ήχου, είτε αυτός σχετίζεται με τις dark ambient απολήξεις, είτε αυτός αναφέρεται καθαρά σε εξάρσεις θορύβου. Αναφέρω -ενδεικτικά- κάποια από τα εν λόγω σχήματα: Olxane, Tor, Kaffalidjma, Muu, The Catacombs of Erudition, κ.α. Συνήθως, ανάλογες περιπτώσεις ακραίας παραγωγικότητας τείνουν να αντιμετωπίζονται με σκεπτικισμό, στην καλύτερη των περιπτώσεων, μάλιστα. Εδώ ωστόσο, τα πράγματα, ευτυχώς, δεν ακολουθούν την κατιούσα οδό της παντελούς απουσίας έμπνευσης.

Απεναντίας, μάλιστα- όπως συμβαίνει και στους άλλους σχηματισμούς του- ο εν λόγω μουσικός εμφανίζεται καίριος και συνάμα καυστικός, επιλέγοντας αυτή τη φορά να εστιάσει σε ένα μελωδικά παλλόμενο, μελαγχολικής υφής black metal. Οι ρίζες του οποίου θα πρέπει να αναζητηθούν στις 90’ς παρεκβάσεις που έλαβαν χώρα στα σκανδιναβικά -κυρίως- εδάφη, ως συνήθως. Αλλά και σε μια, σχεδόν ανεπαίσθητη επιρροή, από τη στωικότητα που χαρακτήριζε εν πολλοίς τον shoegaze ήχο και που εμβόλιμα τοποθετείται εδώ, προσθέτοντας πολλά στη συναισθηματική ανάβαση αυτών των συνθέσεων. Δίνοντας έναν γήινο τόνο, στο κατανυκτικά χειμερινής φύσης οικοδόμημα, που παρουσιάζεται εδώ.

Οι μόλις τρεις συνθέσεις που παρατίθενται σε αυτό το demo, είναι πληρέστατα ενδεικτικές της κατεύθυνσης που αυτό το όχημα θέτει. Μελαγχολικό, μα όχι καταθλιπτικό. Παγερό, μα και παρήγορο. Προσπαθώντας να ξεχωρίσει στιγμές εν μέσω αυτού του ορυμαγδού από riffs, καταλήγει κανείς να αντιμετωπίσει αυτή τη σύντομη παραφορά, ως ένα άρρηκτο σύνολο. Οι πυλώνες του οποίου καθορίζονται από την εγγενή αγάπη του συγκεκριμένου μουσικού προς το υλικό του. Μα και από την άφοβη περιφορά του στα εδάφη της επούλωσης. Συνοπτικά, λοιπόν μιλώντας, θα έλεγα πως το παρόν αποτελεί ένα ακατέργαστο κόσμημα. Το οποίο πολλές και πολλοί, ενδεχομένως να απολαύσουν. Η συνέχεια του οποίου θα είναι, ίσως καθοριστική. Κρίνοντας από το υπάρχον δείγμα, τολμώ να προσθέσω πως η συνέχεια αυτού, θα είναι και υπέροχη.

Προς το παρόν, αυτή η κασέτα κυκλοφόρησε μόλις από ένα μικρό, όπως και εξόχως καλόγουστο ολλανδικό label, ενώ αρχικά είχε κυκλοφορήσει σε digital εκδοχή, λίγους μήνες πριν. Τώρα λοιπόν, έφτασε η στιγμή να περιβληθεί με την προσοχή που αναμφίβολα του αξίζει.

This seemingly unknown formation comes from the Netherlands. Having so far already spawned a few releases, most of which appeared in the form of limited edition tapes. His latest release moves along that fields, regarding format preference, at least. Ancient Morass is in fact the solo vehicle of Tjalling Janssen, who appears to be quite productive, having formed a variety of projects, while, simultaneously, having been a member of a series of bands. The majority of said projects and bands move within the boundaries of certain varieties that associate themselves to the black metal milieu. Yet, among those, one could find some that seem to merge into the fringes of darkly toned sounds. That sort of categorization would largely include dark ambient transmissions, as well as some noise related outbursts. Needless to say, though- some of these formations ought to be mentioned, for sure: Olxane, Tor, Kaffalidjma, Muu, The Catacombs of Erudition and many more, as the list is long, indeed. Usually, the expedition of such phenomenal creativity in short amounts of time, tends to be seen suspiciously, at best. The present case differs, though. Thankfully, this is not a showcase of yet another boring failure. That usually comes as a result of complete and utter lack of inspiration.

Yet, as said, this is not the formula presented here. Quite the contrary, in fact-if compared to the aphorism stated above, this artist’s route so far has been clearly remarkable, in terms of quality. Something that is also easily evident here. Concentrating on this specific release, I could say that, this time around, his sounds are crucial, yet caustic. For now, opting to focus on an audio form that is deeply rooted to the nineties black metal motives, especially those that were cultivated in Scandinavian grounds, an influence that is certainly no stranger to a project of this kind. While not neglecting to add a subtle, scarcely notable amount of the stoic harmony that was such a dominant attribute of the shoegaze cannon, a trait which is carefully embedded in this mix, inserting some delightful modes to the emotional ascension that these sounds explore. Vibrating this whole, operating as a passage to earthly tonal forms. Giving shape to a purely devout foundation, that unfolds itself in the manner of a winter inspired inner core. Its nature diverted into a handful of spinning frequencies.

This demo is contrived of three compositions only, clocking at less than 11 minutes, actually. In the course of its short duration though, it manages to project itself as a fully incisive step, solidly indicative of the path that this project has chosen to move along to. A path that could be heralded as melancholic- and yet, not depressive. Frigid, yet comforting. Attempting to distinguish some motion amid this maelstrom of riffs and phrases, ultimately leads into concluding that this material should actually be regarded as a unified assemblage. The pylons of which seem to be strongly defined by the inherent love that this musician displays, thus connecting his material in a flawless manner. But also, of equal importance is his fearless wandering on captivating terrains. Blessing these songs with an almost healing quality.

Having to reach to a conclusion, I must state that I view this tape as being a roughly tempered jewel. Which could turn into being quite a treat, for many people that would choose to indulge into this sonic territory. The follow up to this demo, might even prove to be of vital importance, I feel. Solely basing my judgment upon this, dare I add that what follows might also prove to be fascinating, as well. Until then, this cassette has just been released by a small, yet wonderfully eclectic dutch label. Having initially seen the light of day, some months ago, as a digital only release. A perfect time, it seems to be, to give this demo the well-deserved attention it ought to receive.
