Pale Divine – Pale Divine (Shadow Kingdom)

Οι Pale Divine από την Pennsylvania είναι κλασικοί πρεσβευτές του παλιού, ανόθευτου και μπαρουτοκαπνισμένου doom metal, εκείνου που γεννήθηκε στην γκριζαδούρα του Birmingham, ανδρώθηκε σε αμερικάνικες υπόγες και δεν γνώρισε παρά μόνο δόξες με cult χαρακτήρα. Στο πέμπτο τους άλμπουμ κάνουν καλά ό,τι έκαναν και στα προηγούμενα, αρκετά καλά για να κουβαλούν μια ακέραια φήμη. Κολλημένοι στα “χρόνια του Ozzy” και γνήσιοι απόγονοι των Pentagram και των Vitus, ο doom ήχος τους κρατάει ζωντανή την ευρύτερη συγγένεια με το rock ’n’ roll –χωρίς να μοιάζει με stoner τραγέλαφο–, ροκάρει ή βαραίνει κατά το δοκούν, ωραία, αστόλιστα και αναλογικά. Εγγυημένα θα περάσεις καλά και σίγουρα δεν υπάρχει λόγος να λιώσεις τον δίσκο. Τώρα το να αναφέρω ότι υπάρχουν και φαλτσάκια και, τέλος πάντων, όχι και κάποια πολύ σπουδαία τεχνική στα παιξίματα θα με κάνει γκρινιάρη, αλλά ελπίζω να μην κρύψει το γεγονός ότι μια χαρά τα περάσαμε.

Vanishing Kids – Heavy Dreamer (Svart Records)

Οι Vanishing Kids δηλώνουν ευθαρσώς ότι είναι παιδιά που μεγάλωσαν με metal, prog, psych, punk, goth και όλα τα καλά του κόσμου. Λοιπόν, επειδή κι εμείς τέτοια παιδιά είμαστε, θα τεντώσουμε με προσοχή τα αυτιά μας και προς μεγάλη μας έκπληξη θα διαπιστώσουμε ότι η εισαγωγική τους δήλωση στέκει. Αυτό το εκλεκτικό κουαρτέτο (με τον Jason Hartman, κιθαρίστα των Jex Thoth) κατορθώνει πραγματικά να κατακτήσει έναν προσωπικό ήχο, που αναλύεται κυρίως σε αιθέρια πλήκτρα που πατούν σε υποστρώματα από ήπια doomrock fuzz-αρίσματα και στεφανώνεται από τα θαυμάσια, τριπαριστά φωνητικά της Nikki Drohomyreky.

Προφανώς, το σχήμα λατρεύει κάθε τι ψυχεδελικό, στις πιο εξευγενισμένες του μορφές, αλλά εξίσου και τα σχεδόν dream pop περιβάλλοντα – ο όρος shoegaze δεν προκρίνεται εδώ. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι αρκούντως ομοιογενές και συνεκτικό και τα διάφορα μουσικά στρώματα είναι απολαυστικά στη διακριτότητά τους. Αυτό που όμως κυρίως μένει είναι ο καθαρά ονειρικός χαρακτήρας της μουσικής τους, όπως εύστοχα προειδοποιεί ο τίτλος του άλμπουμ και το όμορφο εξώφυλλο. Μόνο μειονέκτημα του άλμπουμ ότι το πρώτο κομμάτι “Creation”, ένα θλιμμένο έπος, δεν ξεπερνιέται ποτέ. Κατά τ’ άλλα, το Heavy Dreamer είναι βαριά και ονειρικά προτεινόμενο!

Witchthroat Serpent – Swallow The Venom (Svart Records)

Το όνομα της μπάντας και το εξώφυλλο υπονοούν ίσως κάτι πιο μαύρο, αυτό όμως δεν σημαίνει ότι το doom τους είναι ελαφρύ ή φωτεινό. Κι ενώ οι κιθάρες και ο συνολικότερος ήχος τους ακροβατεί ανάμεσα στο παλιό και το νεότερο (=stoner), τα φωνητικά παραπέμπουν στον αμερικάνικο early ’90s ήχο,θυμίζοντας λίγο τον τεράστιο Rob Lowe, χωρίς όμως τα επικά του στοιχεία. Είναι προφανές ότι επιθυμούν να δώσουν μια ψυχεδελική πνοή μυσταγωγίας στη μουσική τους και σε στιγμές τα καταφέρνουν –για παράδειγμα στο “Pauper’s Grave” όπου ακούγονται απελευθερωμένοι– σε γενικές γραμμές όμως αισθάνομαι ότι μπορούν να κάνουν πολλά περισσότερα και ότι χαλιναγωγούν τους εαυτούς τους. Σε κάθε περίπτωση, οι Witchthroat Serpent από τη Γαλλία παραδίδουν ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον άλμπουμ, χωρίς καν να μοιάζουν σαν να εκπληρώνουν τις δυνατότητές τους. Στο μυαλό μου αχνοφέγγει και αιωρείται ένα “to be continued”, με την ελπίδα οι υποσχέσεις του intro “Feu Sacre” να γονιμοποιηθούν.

Pale Divine from Pennsylvania, USA, are typical ambassadors of the old-school, unspoiled, forged-in-fire doom metal, the kindthat was born under Birmingham’s grey skies and became an adult in American basements, without ever gaining great popularity but lots of dedicated cultfollowers. In their same titled 5th album they continue doing well as they did before, well enough to have been established as an integral and well-respectedband. Obviously addicted to the “Ozzy years” and as original Pentagram/Vitus descendants, their doom sound keeps the relationship with the broad rock ’n’roll alive – without degrading into a cheap stoner act –, as it rocks out orgets heavier by will, in a natural, analogue and unadorned manner. It’sguaranteed that you’ll have a good time and definitely there’s no need tolisten to this many times, since you’ve heard it all before. Countless times. Now, if I was to point out some off-tune notes and the fact that the playing skills are not incredible would make me look like a grump, but I hope I won’tbe misunderstood – I had a good time with this one, authentically.

Vanishing Kids audaciously state that they grew up listening to metal, prog, psych, punk, goth and all the goods music has tooffer. Well, we are exactly this kind of kids too, so we suspiciously focus ourattention to surprisingly find out that their introductory statement is spoton. This eclectic quartet (featuring Jex Thoth’s Jason Hartman) truly forms apersonal sound, mainly consisted of ethereal keyboards that tread on underlays of smooth fuzz guitars and crowned by the wonderful, trippy voice of Nikki Drohomyreky.   Apparently, this band adores anything from the gentlest forms of psychedelic music and dream pop ambiences equally – the term shoegaze doesn’t qualify here. As a result, their sound is homogeneous and cohesive enough andall textures are delightful in their distinctness. But the main aftertaste isthe dreamy character of their music, as the album’s title and cover aptlysuggest. The only “disadvantage” is that the melancholic, epic opening track “Creation” is never surpassed by any other. Besides that, Heavy Dreamer is heavily and dreamily recommended!

Witchthroat Serpent – Swallow The Venom (Svart Records)

Their name and album cover may insinuate somethingblacker but this doesn’t mean that their doom metal is something light, insound or atmosphere. While the guitar work and their sound in general balances between the old and the new (=stoner), the vocals refer to the early ’90s American scene, especially reminding the mighty Rob Lowe – without the epicelements of his voice. It is rather obvious that they intend to infuse theirmusic with a psychedelic and mystified aura and sometimes they succeed –“Pauper’s Grave” for example, where the band sounds freer – but generally Ithink they could do a lot more and that they curb themselves. In any case,Witchthroat Serpent from Toulouse, France, deliver a very interesting album,without even reaching their full potential. The phrase “To Be Continued”shimmers and hovers in my mind, with the hope that the promises of the intro“Fau Sacre” will be kept and fulfilled.
