Ζούμε στην εποχή του “ό,τι δηλώσεις είσαι”. Γιατί είναι ευκολότερο να λες το σωστό, και λέγοντας σωστό εννοούμε εκείνο που επιθυμούν να ακούσουν @ άλλ@, παρά να το πράττεις. Το δηλωθέν μήνυμα εκπέμπεται άμεσα και ερμηνεύεται ευκολότερα από τον δέκτη του. Και ο τομέας της μουσικής δεν ξεφεύγει από τη συγκεκριμένη επικρατούσα συνθήκη. Υπάρχουν μπάντες που σθεναρά υποστηρίζουν ότι είναι “ένα”, μια μονάδα, μια ολότητα. Σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις, ωστόσο, η δήλωση αυτή απέχει από την πράξη.

Κάποι@ δημιουργ@ δεν καταφέρνουν να ξεφύγουν από τα στενά όρια του ατομικισμού και του ναρκισσισμού τους, ώστε να αναδείξουν το συλλογικό τους δημιούργημα. Αλλά οι Birds in row δεν ανήκουν σε αυτήν την κατηγορία. Στους Γάλλους μουσικούς υπάρχει ταύτιση και συνέπεια μεταξύ των όσων δηλώνουν και υποστηρίζουν και των πράξεων και της στάσης τους, ως συλλογικότητας. Επικεντρώνονται στη δημιουργία και όχι στους ίδιους. Για αυτόν τον λόγο τηρούν ένα είδος ανωνυμίας και τα ονόματά τους αντικαθίστανται από τα αρχικά T,Q και B. Γι αυτόν τον λόγο δεν φωτογραφίζονται, παρά μόνο εάν αποτυπώνεται στη φωτογραφία ότι είναι “ένα”, χωρίς δηλαδή να επιδιώκεται η διακριτή εικόνα κάθε μέλους. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο οι δίσκοι και το merch της μπάντας δίνονται χωρίς καθορισμένο αντίτιμο, αλλά με ελεύθερη συνεισφορά από όποιον θέλει να γίνει κοινωνός της δημιουργίας τους.

Η hardcore-post punk μπάντα θέλει να μας κάνει σαφές πως οι συλλογικές δράσεις και αγώνες αποτελούν μονόδρομο για κάποι@ από μας. Γιατί μόνο έτσι μπορεί ο άνθρωπος να αντιμετωπίσει το οτιδήποτε: συλλογικά. Αυτό γίνεται φανερό και από την εικόνα του εξωφύλλου με δυο χέρια, το ένα να κρατά το άλλο. Ο τρόπος που κρατιούνται είναι η αποτύπωση της αμοιβαίας εμπιστοσύνης, μιας ξεκάθαρης δήλωσης του “μαζί”, συντονισμένα, σαν κίνηση χορευτική. Μια στιγμή που αποτυπώνεται στο εξώφυλλο του δίσκου και είναι τόσο ηχηρή όσο και το περιεχόμενό του άλμπουμ.

Στο “We Vs. Us” οι στίχοι “I’m just sick of them all” και “My hand in your hand, And the world to grasp” εντυπώνονται στον νου από την πρώτη κιόλας ακρόαση του άλμπουμ. “Don’t tell me what to do, don’t tell me where the fuck I come from” στο “Love Is Political”, όπου και εκεί, μέσα από εναλλαγές έντασης και ηρεμίας, τα μουσικά περάσματα επιτρέπουν στη μελαγχολία και στον θυμό να εκφραστούν. Για να δώσουν στο “Fossils” την ελπίδα και την προοπτική “To all the unhappy wanderers, After the desert there is a sea”.

Ίσως κάποι@ αντιμετωπίζουν με σκωπτική διάθεση τις φωνές και τις ιαχές του τραγουδιστή, θεωρώντας πως δεν αποτελούν τίποτα περισσότερο από μια βαβούρα. Κάποι@ άλλ@ όμως, σε αυτές τις κραυγές ακούμε την οργή, την απελπισία, την αγανάκτηση, την αντίδραση και την αντίσταση. Γιατί πώς αλλιώς θα δηλώσεις ότι δεν αποδέχεσαι σιωπηρά και πειθήνια όσα σου “σερβίρουν”, όλα όσα θέλουν να σου επιβάλλουν “για το καλό σου”. Μέσα από punk και hardcore εναλλαγές, με τη θυμωμένη μανία του τραγουδιστή, την ένταση που βγαίνει από το σύνολο της δημιουργίας τους, σε κάνουν να αναρωτιέσαι, εκφράζοντας τις βαθύτερές τους σκέψεις, τα συναισθήματά τους, μουσικά και στιχουργικά.

Έξι χρόνια μετά την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου τους άλμπουμ You, Me And The Violence, οι BIR κυκλοφορούν το άλμπουμ We Already Lost The World, στηλιτεύουν τον εγωκεντρισμό και την εγωπάθεια των ανθρώπων στους στίχους τους. Ένα σαφές μήνυμα για την επικράτηση του εμείς και την ανατροπή του εγώ. Και πως όταν δεν έχεις τίποτα άλλο να χάσεις, το μόνο που μπορείς να κάνεις είναι να παλεύεις και να αγωνίζεσαι. Ξεκάθαρα. Απλά.

We are facing the times when everyone is considered as what he/she declares to be. Because it’s easier to say the right things, and by saying right, we mean things that people wish to listen to from the others and this is easier than the actual action itself. The declared message is immediately transmitted and interpreted more easily by the receiver. And the music sector does not escape the specific prevailing condition. There are bands that strongly state that they are one, a unit. But sometimes this declaration is far apart from the action itself.

Many artists cannot escape the narrow limits of their individualism or their narcissism, so that they will be able to reveal their collective creation. Birds in Row do not belong in this category. There is a sense of identification and consistency among the things the French musicians are saying, doing or showing with their attitude, as a collectivity. Their focus is on creation and not on themselves. That is why they keep a sense of anonymity· instead of using their names they are known as T, Q and B. That is why they are not being photographed, unless it is depicted in the photograph that they are “one”, without seeking the distinct image of each member. This is the reason why the band‘s albums and merchandises are offered without a fixed price but with free contribution from anyone who wants to support them.

The hardcore-post punk band has a clear message, that collective actions and struggles are a one-way street for some of us. Only this way can we deal with anything: collectively. This is also evident from the picture of the cover with two hands holding each other. The way they are held depicts mutual trust, a clear declaration of “togetherness”, coordinated, as a dance movement. A moment that is captured on the cover of the album and is as resonant as the album’s content.

In “We vs. Us” the lyrics “I’m just sick of them all” and “my hand in your hand, and the world to grasp” are imprinted in the mind from the very first listening of the album. “Don’t tell me what to do, don’t tell me where the fuck I come from” in “Love Is Political” where, through variations of intensity and tranquility, musical passages allow melancholy and anger to express themselves. In “Fossils” they are giving us hope and perspective “to all the unhappy wanderers after the desert there is a sea”.

Some people may scoff at the voices and the vocals of the singer, considering that they are no more than a hubbub. Others, however, like us, in these cries hear anger, despair, indignation, reaction and resistance. Why else would you say that you do not tacitly accept the things you are being served, anything that they want to impose on you “for your sake”. Through punk and hardcore alternations, with the angry frenzy of the singer, the tension that comes out of their whole creation makes you wonder, as they express their deepest thoughts, their emotions, through both their music and lyrics.

Six years after the release of their first album You, Me And The Violence, BIR release the album We Already Lost The World in which they criticize the self-centeredness and selfishness of the people in their verses. It’s a clear message for the prevalence of “us” and the overthrow of “ego”. And that, when you have nothing else to lose, the only thing that you can do is fight. Clearly. Simply.
