Είναι στιγμές που δεν χωράς πουθενά. Δεν θες να περιοριστείς σε τέσσερις τοίχους, δεν σου αρκούν οι δρόμοι της πόλης, αναζητάς κάτι διαφορετικό, κάτι που σε παίρνει μακριά από την καθημερινή σου ρουτίνα. Αναζητάς ανοιχτό ορίζοντα, ανοιχτό ουρανό, ανοιχτές θάλασσες, δάση και βουνά. Θες να περιπλανηθείς στη φύση, εκεί που δεν σου επιβάλλεται κανένας περιορισμός. Παρέα με τη νεφελώδη ατμόσφαιρα και το σούρουπο να παίζει με το φως και τις σκιές.

Συγκερασμός διαφορετικών όψεων που συνθέτουν μια εικόνα μυστικιστική. Δέντρα, βράχια, μονοπάτια, ουρανός και μια ομίχλη που τα αγκαλιάζει, χωρίς να θέλει να τα κρύψει. Το τοπίο αφήνεται στη ματιά σου, αποκαλύπτεται όσο η ομίχλη σού το επιτρέπει, σαν κάτι που είναι απαγορευμένο και θα το δεις όταν εκείνη σου επιτρέψει και όταν είσαι εσύ έτοιμ@ να το δεις πραγματικά. Κάποιες φορές, η ομίχλη δημιουργεί τις προϋποθέσεις για να ξεκαθαρίσει ό,τι δεν είναι ξεκάθαρο (όσο οξύμωρο κι αν ακούγεται αυτό).

Αυτό είναι το σκηνικό που στήνει ο νους, ακούγοντας τις πρώτες κιόλας νότες του debut album από τα Vouna. Η Yianna Bekris (υπήρξε μέλος και στις μπάντες Vradiazei, Eigenlicht και Sadhaka) αποτυπώνει τη μυστικιστική ατμόσφαιρα, την ομιχλώδη αίσθηση του black Cascadian metal με funeral doom και folk στοιχεία. Το άλμπουμ είναι ένα one-woman show, μιας και όλα τα όργανα παίζονται από την ίδια και, παράλληλα, στίχοι και μουσική αποτελούν δικές της δημιουργίες. Η ηχογράφηση, δε, του άλμπουμ πραγματοποιήθηκε στο στούντιο των Wolves In The Throne Room, ενώ ο Nathan Weaver συνεργάστηκε με τη Yianna και στο εξώφυλλο του δίσκου.

Τα στοιχειωμένα, πένθιμα και μελαγχολικά φωνητικά της πλαισιώνουν τη μελωδία και τις νότες των μουσικών οργάνων. Το μαύρο μέταλλο κυριαρχεί στη σχεδόν επιθανάτια ατμόσφαιρα που δημιουργείται, κυρίως από τα synth, σαν μια αίσθηση λιτανείας, στο “Drowning City”. Η έναρξη του άλμπουμ με το “A place to rest” δίνει το στίγμα της μπάντας, με το ορχηστρικό “Castle” να ακολουθεί. Τα “Last Dream” και “You took me” σε παρασύρουν στην καθηλωτική ατμόσφαιρα των Βουνών.

Στο άκουσμα του άλμπουμ συνθέτεις το σκηνικό. Η φύση σού δίνει τα στοιχεία της απλόχερα. Απομένει να επιλέξεις πώς θα τα συνθέσεις. Αντιπαραθετικά, αρμονικά, ομοιόμορφα ή αντίρροπα, εσύ επιλέγεις και φτιάχνεις τη δική σου ισορροπία. Παρέα σου στην περιπλάνηση αυτή οι νύμφες, τα πλάσματα του δάσους που κινούνται σαν αερικά ανάμεσα στα στοιχεία της φύσης αγκαλιάζοντάς τα, δίνοντάς τους πνοή και ανάσα ύπαρξης. Η διαφορά είναι πως στο συγκεκριμένο σκηνικό, με μουσική υπόκρουση τα Vouna, οι νύμφες φοράνε μαύρα. Και η μουσική τους απογειώνει το τοπίο με όλα όσα αυτό περιλαμβάνει.

Sometimes you feel like you don’t fit anywhere. You do not want to be confined to four walls, you feel that the city streets are not enough for you, you are looking for something different, something that will take you away from your daily routine. You are looking for an open sky, open seas, forests and mountains. You want to wander in nature, where no restrictions are imposed on you. Together with the cloudy atmosphere and the dusk, playing with light and shadows.

A combination of different images that create a mystical picture. Trees, rocks, paths, the sky and a fog that embraces them all, with no need to hide anything. The landscape shows itself before your eyes, it is revealed as long as the fog allows it, as if it were something forbidden. Something that you ‘ll see when the fog permits you to and when you are ready to actually see it. Sometimes, the fog creates the conditions under which whatever is not clear is being clarified (paradoxical as it may sound).

This is the setting that the mind creates, listening to the very first notes of the debut album from Vouna. Yianna Bekris (also a member of the bands Vradiazei, Eigenlicht and Sadhaka) portrays the mystical atmosphere, the muddy sense of black Cascadian metal with funeral doom and folk elements. The album is a one-woman show, since she is the one that plays all the instruments and, at the same time, lyrics and music are her own creations. The album was recorded in Wolves In The Throne Room’s studio and Nathan Weaver collaborated with Yianna on the cover of the album.

Her haunted, mournful and melancholic vocals surround the tune and notes of musical instruments. Black metal dominates the almost-deathly atmosphere created mainly by the synths, making you feel like you’ re in a procession, in “Drowning City”. The opening song of the album “A place to rest” leaves the band’s mark, and then, the instrumental “Castle” follows. “Last Dream” and “You took me” drift you away, into the vibrant atmosphere of the mountains.

While listening to the album, you can imagine the scenery. Nature offers its elements generously. You only have to choose the way to compose them. Confrontationally, harmoniously, evenly or in the opposite direction, you choose and create your own balance. Your nymphs, creatures of the forest, with their ethereal moves among the elements of nature, embrace them, giving them breath and life. The difference is that, in this particular scene, with the music of Vouna playing in the bagkground, the nymphs are dressed in black. And the music helps the scenery take off, including everything this may involve.
