Αν θα ήθελε κανείς να ντύσει με επίθετα τη διαδικασία της καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας, θα τη χαρακτήριζε ίσως επίπονη ή αποκαλυπτική, υπαινισσόμενος ότι το υποκείμενο βιώνει μια πνευματική “γέννα” που δεν μπορεί παρά να το απογυμνώνει από τις αγκυλώσεις και τους φόβους του. Σε κάθε, όμως, περίπτωση θα την αποκαλούσε αέναη, αφού ποτέ δεν μπορούμε να οριοθετήσουμε τη γέννηση και τον θάνατο μιας ιδέας. Σίγουρα αυτή συλλαμβάνεται από ένα άτομο προορισμένο να πάψει μια μέρα να υπάρχει στον υλικό κόσμο, αλλά η ίδια (εν όλω ή τμηματικά) μπορεί να υπάρχει για πάντα ενσωματωμένη σε νέα έργα άλλων υποκειμένων.

Άλλοτε πάλι, η ίδια ιδέα μπορεί να λαμβάνει σταδιακά μορφή μέσα από το πέρας χρόνων, ολοένα εξελισσόμενη. Αυτή είναι η περίπτωση των A Shoreline Dream, μιας indie rock μπάντας από το Ντένβερ. Μετά από τέσσερις δίσκους, με τελευταίο το Silent Sunrise του 2014, η μπάντα ξεκίνησε ένα καλλιτεχνικό ταξίδι που διαρκεί μέχρι και σήμερα με την κυκλοφορία του EP Waitout.

Μέσα σε χρονικό διάστημα τεσσάρων ετών έχουν κυκλοφορήσει ισάριθμα single, όλα κομμάτια μιας γενικότερης θεματικής, η οποία θα παρουσιαστεί στην ολότητά της στο επόμενο full length τους, όποτε αυτό βρει τον δρόμο του για το ευρύ κοινό. Το εναρκτήριο σημείο δεν είναι άλλο από το single Time Is A Machine (2015) που μας εισάγει σε μια ονειρική πτήση (“dreaming high/ the longer we sleep/the longer we can fly”) αναπόφευκτα προορισμένη να καταλήξει στην πτώση του revolvist (2016 – there is no way to fall in/we’re revolvists /we’ll revolve), από την οποία θα αναδυθούμε, αν απεμπλακούμε από το παρελθόν και από τους “άλλους” (whirlwind -2016 & Room For The Others – 2017).

Πράγματι, η αλλαγή ως συνειδητή επιλογή είναι ο θεματικός πυρήνας πάνω στον οποίο πατά το Waitout, με τα πέντε κομμάτια του “Waitout”, “In The Ready Sound”, “Barnum”, “New York” και “Projections” να απηχούν τόσο μια ωδή στο παρελθόν (τα “Barnum”, “New York” και “Projections” αποτελούν μερικές από τις πρώτες συνθέσεις της μπάντας, όταν αυτή πρωτοσχηματίστηκε το 2005, τις οποίες επεξεργάζονται εκ νέου) όσο και μια ελεγεία στην πολυπόθητη ανάγκη όλων μας να απαλλάξουμε τον εαυτό μας από τη ραστώνη και την προσκόλληση στο οικείο.

Ίσως να μην υπάρχει πιο χαρακτηριστικός στίχος του μακροχρόνιου ταξιδιού των A Shoreline Dream που απηχεί την εσωτερική αμφισβήτηση του καθενός από εμάς από αυτόν που αφήνει στον νου το “In The Ready Sound”.

Should anyone feel like choosing a way to describe the artistic process, one would use the words “painful” or “revealing”, thus hinting to the fact that the subject undergoes a spiritual “birth” that brings one’s restraints and fears on the surface. In any case, we would call it perpetual since there can be no definite limit to signify the birth and the demise of an idea. Surely, an idea is conceived by a person that is destined to leave this world one day, but the idea itself (as a whole or a part of it) may as well exist forever incorporated in the works of other artists.

Sometimes though, an idea can take its form gradually through the course of many years, constantly evolving. That is the case of A Shoreline Dream, an indie rock band from Denver. With a production of four albums, Silent Sunrise being the last to be released in 2014, the band emerged on an artistic journey that goes on to this day with the release of this year’s EP, Waitout, being the latest trace of their track.

In the span of these four years, the band released an equal number of singles – all of them being a part of a greater scheme that is set to be presented to us when their next full length album is released. The starting point is no other but the single Time Is A Machine (2015) which welcomes us aboard a dreamy flight (“dreaming high/ the longer we sleep/the longer we can fly”) that is inevitably destined to lead to the fall of revolvist (2016 – there is no way to fall in/we’re revolvists /we’ll revolve). But rest assured, we’ll come back from this fall, once we let go of our past and of “the others” (whirlwind -2016 & Room For The Others – 2017).

Indeed, change as a conscious choice is the theme around which Waitout set its course. Its five tracks “Waitout”, “In The Ready Sound”, “Barnum”, “New York” and “Projections” echo so much as an ode to the past (“Barnum”, “New York” and “Projections” are amongst the band’s first compositions from the distant 2005, that are here represented) and also as an elegy to our desire as individuals to rid ourselves of inertia and our attachment to whatever feels familiar.

There might be no other lyric more characteristic of the long-lasting journey of A Shoreline Dream than the following, taken from “In The Ready Sound”, signifying the inner doubt we all experience from time to time.
