Εδώ έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα πρωτοεμφανιζόμενο “σχήμα” και το πρώτο του demo.

Βάζω τη λέξη σχήμα σε εισαγωγικά, καθώς πρόκειται για one man band. Η solo, λοιπόν, αυτή απόπειρα κινείται στα μονοπάτια του black metal προερχόμενη μάλιστα από τη Σκωτία, μια χώρα χωρίς ιδιαίτερη παράδοση στο συγκεκριμένο είδος από την οποία ωστόσο έχουν εμφανιστεί κάποια αξιόλογα σχήματα σε αυτόν τον χώρο προσφάτως.

Πρόκειται αρχικά για μια αρκετά σύντομη δουλειά, η συνολική διάρκεια της οποίας είναι μικρότερη των 9 λεπτών. Γίνεται, λοιπόν, άμεσα αντιληπτό το ότι αυτό που μας προσφέρει ο εν λόγω καλλιτέχνης είναι μια πρωταρχική γνωριμία με τον ήχο του, ο οποίος χοντρικά θα έλεγα πως βρίσκεται στα χωράφια του μελαγχολικού, θρηνητικού black metal. Φέρνει στον νου σχήματα όπως οι Mutiilation και οι Judas Iscariot, μεταξύ άλλων. Η αυστηρά κασετικής υφής ηχητική προσέγγιση χρωματίζει εντόνως το αποτέλεσμα. Κρατώντας μια ωμή και φαινομενικά ακάθαρτη στάση, αναδεικνύει τις όποιες ποιότητες του Temple Moon επαρκώς. Ίσως μάλιστα βρίσκεται σε μια σχεδόν ιδανική ισορροπία: όπου τα όργανα και οι φωνές ακούγονται καθαρά, μα όχι πεντακάθαρα. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο γίνονται εμφανείς οι βάσεις αυτής της απόπειρας. Το κέντρο βάρους της κρατούν οι μελαγχολικής υφής μελωδίες της κιθάρας. Η φωνή ακούγεται αρκούντως απόκοσμη, ενώ τα τύμπανα παίρνουν χώρο στο βάθος και μόνον εκεί. Παρατήρησα επίσης μια υφέρπουσα ζεστασιά στο σύνολο της ακρόασης, η οποία ενδόμυχα και συνειρμικά παραπέμπει στις ρίζες της ελληνικής black metal σκηνής των ’90s. Πρόκειται όμως για δευτερεύουσα επιρροή, καθώς η κύρια στόχευση του Temple Moon είναι άλλη. Κάνοντας μνεία και στο αμιγώς αισθητικό κομμάτι, διακρίνω μια προσπάθεια να αποδοθεί φόρος τιμής στο ύφος των φωτογραφιών και εξωφύλλων που γνώρισε άνθηση στα ’90s. Λιτότητα και άχρωμος μινιμαλισμός, συνεπώς.

Συνοπτικά μιλώντας, θα έλεγα ότι μου άρεσε πολύ αυτή η κασέτα. Το κύριο μειονέκτημα νομίζω πως είναι εμφανώς η μικρή της διάρκεια. Αυτή όμως η έλλειψη άνετα διορθώνεται με συνεχόμενες, διαδοχικές ακροάσεις. Θαρρώ πως όσοι αρέσκονται στο θλιμμένο-μα ουχί καταθλιπτικό- black metal θα βρουν κάτι απολαυστικό σε αυτήν την κυκλοφορία.

Προς το παρόν, λοιπόν, ετούτο το demo στέκει ως μια πειστική και πολλά υποσχόμενη αφετηρία.

What I am dealing with here is the first demo of a newly-formed project. The term project loosely applies here though since this is actually a one – man band. This solo attempt is firmly rooted in a black metal path οriginating from Scotland – a country with no notable tradition regarding this genre. In recent years, however, a handful of worthwhile Scottish bm bands has emerged.

To begin with, this is a really brief work – its total duration being less than 9 minutes. That obviously leads me to the conclusion that what is on offer here might serve as a first hand introduction to this artist’s sound. Α sound which roughly moves along the fields of a melancholic, mournful type of black metal bringing to mind bands such as Mutiilation and Judas Iscariot, among others. A strict sonic approach shades the output, intensely. Sticking to a raw and seemingly unpolished stance, it allows Temple Moon’s abilities to shine through, sufficiently enough. Maybe even to the point of achieving an almost ideal balance: instruments and vocals can be clearly heard, while the outcome never comes off as being too-polished. Thus, the principles of this attempt become easily obvious. Sorrowful guitar melodies hold the main focus. Vocals are delivered in an out of this world mode, operating exactly as they should. Meanwhile drum parts are used almost solely as a background apart from some frills, here and there. I also took notice of an underlying warmth that is present on this recording. Which subtly reminds of certain 90’s greek bm bands. This influence is a minor one, though, since a different target is at hand for Temple Moon. Another point that deserves a mention, is the overall aesthetic side of this tape. I view this as an intentional homage to the style that was in fashion-back in the 90’s. And, there you go-yet another reference to this decade/era! Which in this case portrays austerity and colorless minimalism.

As a conclusion, I must admit that I really enjoyed this cassette. Its main disadvantage being the fact that its duration is short. That is a problem easily solved, though. Multiple listenings can fix this, for sure. I guess that those that have a soft spot for sorrowful yet not depressive black metal will discover some decadently charming moments, herein. For now, this demo stands as a very promising and convincing start.
